Utah gymnastics will take on No. 2 Oklahoma; Utes still waiting on release of Pac-12 schedule

The meet with the defending champs is set for Jan. 17. ESPN2 will televise it.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Maile O'Keefe is cheered by her teammates after getting a 9.975 on the beam as the fourth-ranked University of Utah Red Rocks gymnastics team host Stanford, Friday, March 6, 2020, at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.

The big showdown between Utah’s fourth-ranked gymnastics team and No. 2 Oklahoma will have a national audience as it was announced the Jan. 17 meet will be televised by ESPN2.

The meet will begin at 3 p.m., MT in Norman, Okla.

The meet marks the first time the two teams meet in the regular season since 1992, but they do have some history with the Utes leading the all-time series 28-10.

Oklahoma has dominated the national scene in recent years, winning three of the last four NCAA titles and finishing as the runner-up in 2018.

The teams seemed set for a post-season showdown in 2020 before the season was cancelled as Utah ended the shortened year with an 11-0 record and Oklahoma was 16-0.

The Utes begin their season Jan. 9 in the Best of Utah meet at 7 p.m., at the Maverik Center against Utah State, SUU and BYU.

Utah’s Pac-12 schedule has yet to be announced.
