BYU-Pacific men’s basketball game on hold due to COVID-19 — the Cougars’ third straight WCC postponement
Virus issues in the Tigers’ program forces the postponement
(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Brigham Young Cougars guard Brandon Averette (4) goes in for two points, in basketball action between the Brigham Young Cougars and the Weber State Wildcats at Vivint Arena, on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020.
The hits keep on coming.
Yet another BYU men’s basketball game has been postponed due to COVID-19-related protocols — this time within the Pacific program.
The Cougars had originally been set to host Pacific on Thursday. Instead, it is the third-straight postponement for BYU.
After finishing the nonconference portion of the schedule with a 9-2 record, BYU was originally scheduled to open conference play Dec. 31 at Pepperdine, but has yet faced a West Coast Conference opponent. The Cougars, who are next scheduled to travel to Saint Mary’s for a Jan. 14 matchup, haven’t played in nearly two weeks.
Of the league’s five scheduled games last Saturday, all but one were postponed due to COVID-19-related issues. Programs in California seem to be having the most issues. On Monday, California reported 29,633 new cases and 97 more deaths from the day prior, according to the California Department of Public Health.
The state is currently seeing a 12.4% positivity rate over the last two weeks.
