(Photo courtesy of Lamont Joseph White) Lamont Joseph White of Park City painted his Skiing in Color series, including this piece called "Pledge," in part to bring attention to Black skiers and snowboarders and keep people from looking at him as "the unicorn on the mountain" whenever he goes skiing or snowboarding. Ski resorts, which are mostly white and male, have been under pressure to become more diverse and inclusive on the slopes and among the staff and management following the social movements that erupted in the summer of 2020.
Julie left the beach of Santa Cruz, Calif., where she worked for 17 years, for the mountains of Salt Lake City in 2019. She has covered the NBA Finals, the Super Bowl, the World Series, the Maverick's big wave surf contest and two Olympics. A Colorado native, she enjoys creating her own adventure, occasionally with her husband and two kids in tow.
