For the second straight year — and the fourth time overall — The Salt Lake Tribune’s Peggy Fletcher Stack has been named the nation’s top religion reporter among midsize newspapers.
Stack earned the Religion News Association’s 2018 Cornell Award for her stories about a new Catholic bishop who is bringing diversity and dynamism to the Salt Lake City diocese, a former Mormon temple architect and lay leader who is building a new life as a woman, and how Utah Christians balance the pain of a loved one’s violent death with the promise of Easter.
Second place went to Tim Funk of The Charlotte Observer.
Stack’s latest honor was announced Saturday at RNA’s conference in Columbus, Ohio. She previously earned the top Cornell prize in 2004, 2012 and 2017. She collected the American Academy of Religion Award in 2013 and was a co-author of one of the stories in The Tribune’s 2017 Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation of sexual assaults at Utah colleges.
