Letter: Saving the 1%

(Francisco Kjolseth | Tribune file photo) Euro Treasures Antiques places "we give up, store closing," signs in downtown Salt Lake City as the COVID-19 pandemic takes its toll on businesses on Wednesday, April 29, 2020.

With the onset of COVID-19, the government has overreached its step with damaging restrictions to small and medium businesses here in the Salt Lake Valley. According to multiple sources, the coronavirus’ death rate is around 1%. I guess this fact begs the question of, “Is it worth the shutdown of many people’s lives and businesses, which could potentially destroy their livelihoods, only to save the 1%?”

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources.
