Letter: Let Acton pay for her abortion bill

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Rep. Cheryl Acton during floor time on Friday, Feb. 22, 2019.

Utah state Rep. Cheryl Acton has been told that her bill on abortions, House Bill 136, will not stand a legal challenge and that it might cost the taxpayers of Utah $1-$3 million in legal fees. She says this "little bit of money" is worth it to fight for this bill.

It is easy to start a legal fight when someone else is paying the bill.

If Acton really feels this strongly about starting this losing legal fight, then she should agree that taxpayers will not pay all of this cost. She should agree that if her bill fails a legal challenge then she will forfeit from that day forward all of her pay and benefits that she receives as a member of the Utah Legislature, including her low-cost health insurance. And further she should agree that the good people of West Jordan, who voted Acton into office, will forfeit 25 percent of all funding they receive from the state of Utah for a period of five years.

This simple agreement by Acton test how strongly she will support her own bill.
