Letter: It’s your vote for lawmakers that matters
(Lindsay Whitehurst | The Associated Press) Religious leaders demonstrating against Utah lawmakers' efforts to scale back a voter-approved expansion of Medicaid sit in front of the entrance to the Utah House of Representatives singing protest songs as legislators debate the bill in Salt Lake City, Friday, Feb. 8, 2019. Counter protesters in favor of the bill are also on hand in Salt Lake City.
Many Utah citizens are rightfully upset with the Utah Legislature overriding of the popular vote results on Propositions 2 and 3. However, concluding that this means one’s vote does not matter is not correct.
What this indicates is that your vote for proper representation matters more than ever.
If your legislators did not vote per the clear will of the people, especially as expressed within their districts, it is your responsibility to vote them out of office and put in someone who is truly representative. That is the true power of the ballot box, and you cannot exercise that power if you abstain.
