Letter: Opposing a hate crimes law is an act of hate

Those who oppose or fail to support including LGBT persons within the scope of Utah’s “hate crimes” statute are committing acts of hate. Actively attempting to block protection of the LGBT community from violence arising from bigotry is an even more egregious act of hate.
I challenge anyone to provide a cogent reason why this shameful omission should not be rectified immediately.
