Letter: Love is wrong about why she lost

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) Mia Love said her defeat means she is Òunleashed, untethered and I am unshackled and I can say exactly what is on my mind.Ó Love, the former two-term republican representative from Utah's 4th Congressional District held a press conference at the Utah Republican Party headquarters, Nov. 26, 2018 to discuss her accomplishments, Washington politics, President Donald Trump and her future.

Mia Love, on TV and then in the Dec. 8 Salt Lake Tribune, said that she lost her bid for re-election because of her race. She also said that Democratic policies are designed to keep poor people poor and Republican aim to lift them up toward being self-sustaining independence.

That is all wrong. The GOP wants two kinds of people: the rich and the poor who work for the rich, and that is what has gone on for a long time.

Mia, you need to face the facts Trump’s ratings are falling and you were part of that.

sltrib.com is now free to access — no subscription required. We made this decision because we believe access to trustworthy, independent news shouldn’t depend on what you can afford — especially as misinformation and AI-generated content continue to rise.

Free to read doesn’t mean free to produce. Our reporters show up every day to ask hard questions and hold powerful institutions to account. That work takes resources. As a nonprofit newsroom, we rely on support from people who believe it matters. Make a donation today to fund local news that serves Utah communities.
