Park City Mountain surrenders to heat, announces imminent closing date

Recent storms dropped less snow than anticipated, leading to an abrupt end to the season.

Park City Mountain abruptly announced Friday it will close for the season on Sunday.

The largest lift-accessed ski area in the United States expected to stay open through mid-April. But this week’s storms only dropped about a foot of snow on the slopes — less than operators hoped.

That, combined with the hottest winter in Utah history, means the Park City Mountain will close for the season this weekend.

Chris Ingham, the ski resort’s vice president of mountain operations, made the announcement in a video posted Friday on Instagram.

He stood near the Crest chairlift, in front of a mostly brown landscape cut through with a few streaks of white.

“Our ops teams have been working magic all winter long,” he said, “but even that magic can’t really fight back against what Mother Nature has delivered at the tail end of the season for us.”

Park City Mountain reported receiving 7 inches of snow in the last 24 hours and 13 inches over the past two days. It has a 66-inch base per its ski report.

On Friday, it was offering spring break skiers and snowboarders 10 runs — three of which were groomed — off of six lifts. All of that was out of its Canyons Village base. The resort closed its lower-elevation Mountain Village base on March 29.

For the season, Park City Mountain reported receiving 171 inches of snow. That’s about half of its reported average of 350 inches.

Nearby, Deer Valley Resort closed last week, though the ski season is not over in Park City. Woodward Park City — one of the state’s lowest-elevation resorts — has said it will remain open through April 12.
