Dominion Energy halts Utah marketing campaign for HomeServe insurance

Dominion Energy Utah has suspended a marketing campaign after complaints prompted the Utah Division of Public Utilities to issue a consumer alert about “misleading mailers offering insurance services on gas company letterhead.”

Division Director Chris Parker issued the alert Monday after receiving complaints about envelopes bearing Dominion Energy logos, containing paperwork with a gas company letterheard, promoting insurance services offered by HomeServe.

“Consumers have contacted investigators to say the envelopes printed with Dominion Energy logos are confusing and look like gas bills or company correspondence,” he said.

HomeServe provides insurance coverage on utility lines that come off main lines to serve individual homes and are the homeowner’s financial responsibility. It is licensed to operate in Utah by the state Department of Insurance, Parker said, but is not affiliated with Dominion Energy Utah.

“While the division may pursue action against Dominion Energy if warranted, consumers are encouraged to file complaints,” he added.

“In light of the division’s consumer alert and some confusion caused by the mailings,” gas company spokesman Don Porter responded, “the marketing campaign has been halted for the time being. The company will now focus on resolving the concerns expressed by Dominion Energy’s Utah customers.”
