Woman dies in Weber County jail

(Leah Hogsten | Tribune file photo) This Sept. 15, 2011 file photo shows the Weber County Sheriff Complex in Ogden, Utah.

A female inmate died at the Weber County jail due to unknown causes, the sheriff’s office reported Monday afternoon.

COVID-19 does not appear to be a factor in the death, the Weber County Sheriff’s Office noted in a news release posted to social media. The jail’s medical unit was observing the woman for various medical issues, and she became unresponsive as officers and nurses assisted her to the shower. Staff tried to revive her, but emergency medical responders declared the woman dead at the scene.

The death remains under investigation.

The sheriff’s office is working on notifying the inmate’s relatives and has not released her name. A request for additional comment placed with a jail spokesperson was not immediately returned.
