A 14-year-old Sandy boy has been booked into juvenile detention after he reportedly shot his 18-year-old neighbor to death.

The alleged shooter and the victim, who were neighbors in a Sandy mobile home park, got into a “heated argument” about 6 p.m. Wednesday near 200 W. Eastgate Drive, according to Sgt. Clay Swenson of the Sandy Police Department.

“We’re still looking into exactly what led up to the argument,” he said, “which escalated to the point where a gun was produced and shots were fired.”

Police are still investigating how many shots were fired, but “at least one” struck 18-year-old Aliani Mejia-Marin. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she died.

According to Swenson, Mejia-Marin and the 14-year-old “knew each other and had some association. We’re not exactly sure what the relationship was.”

The 14-year-old, whose name was not released because of his age, and two other boys were arguing with Mejia-Marin and a man, who “may also have been a victim,” Swenson said. The other two boys have been interviewed and they “could face charges” after the investigation is completed.
