West Jordan police making progress in Saturday’s double homicide case

A day after a husband and wife were killed in an apparent home invasion, West Jordan detectives are still trying to gather as much information as possible about the homicides early Saturday.

Initially, the motive wasn’t clear. On Saturday, West Jordan police spokesman Sgt. J.C. Holt told The Salt Lake Tribune that the case wasn’t like other home invasions, where the victims are killed by someone trying to take drugs or money.

However, Holt said they have now found some motives that police are pursuing.

“There’s plenty that weve figured out, but unfortunately, they’re not details we can disclose right now just because it will compromise the investigation,” Holt said.

The police identified the couple as Tony and Katherine Butterfield, who were found shot dead out in the backyard and inside the home near 3200 West and 6900 South, respectively. Holt said it appeared the suspect had rummaged through the home, but was unsure of what may have been taken.

The couple’s three young children, who were home at the time of the incident and were unharmed, are staying with family members. A GoFundMe account has been set up to support the children.

While the investigation continues, Holt hopes to have some good information soon.

“But we are making progress — I would say that,” Holt said. “We’re making progress on the case that we’re hopeful to bring some resolution to quickly.”
