Ground will be broken on May 30 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ new temple in Layton, church officials announced Thursday.

The three-story, 87,000-square-foot temple will be built on an 11.8-acre site on the corner of Oak Hills Drive and Rosewood Lane in Layton. The site was announced in July, and a rendering of the new temple was released in October.

The church has 17 temples in Utah, and has six more in some stage of development: Layton, Orem, Saratoga Springs, Taylorsville, Tooele Valley and Washington County.

The church Thursday also announced an April 11 groundbreaking for a temple in Richmond, Va. — the first in that state — and a May 2 groundbreaking in Alabang, Philippines, a country that has seven temples announced or completed.

Latter-day Saints view temples as Houses of the Lord, places where faithful members participate in their religion’s highest rites.
