Body of missing hiker found in Utah desert

The body of a New Jersey man was found this week near Boulder, about a month after he went for a day hike and did not return.

Norman Everett Applegate Jr., 72, left Boulder on Sept. 26 to go hiking, Garfield County sheriff’s officials wrote in social media post. His body was found Tuesday, deputies wrote; crews recovered his body on Wednesday.

Deputies did not say where exactly Applegate’s body was found or which trail he was believed to have taken when he died.

“Preliminary investigation has shown no suspicious activity in Mr. Applegate’s death,” deputies wrote. “However the cause of his death is still under investigation.”

Applegate was from Seaside Park, NJ, according to the statement.

“Our deepest sympathy for his family," deputies wrote.
