Salt Lake City’s food co-op, in the works for years, finally has an opening date

Wasatch Food Co-op will soon be open on 900 South.

(Bethany Baker | The Salt Lake Tribune) The Wasatch Food Co-op is seen in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, March 18, 2026. The food cooperative, in the works for decades, has set an opening date.

After years of planning and waiting, Wasatch Food Co-op finally has an opening date for its physical location in Salt Lake City.

According to an Instagram reel posted by real estate agent and historian Babs De Lay, the co-op is opening on May 20, and both members and nonmembers will be able to shop there.

The brick-and-mortar location of Wasatch Food Co-op, at 416 E. 900 South, has been in the works for almost two decades. The market is the anchor tenant in the Milk Block development on 900 South, along with businesses and organizations like Neighbors Bar, Equality Utah and Xiao Bao Bao.

The co-op will be about one-fifth the size of the nearby Smith’s grocery store at 800 South and 900 East, said co-op development coordinator Barbara Pioli in 2023, and its focus is on local food and goods.

The co-op is housed in what was originally the O.P. Skaggs Market, which has been the location of several businesses over the decades, including Southeast Market.
