Steven Nyman, Ted Ligety headline Utahns named to U.S. Alpine Ski Team for 2020-21

Utah skiers Ted Ligety and Steven Nyman have been named to the United States Alpine Ski Team for the 2020-21 season, U.S. Ski & Snowboard announced Friday.

Nyman, 38, of Sundance has been a member of the team since 2004. Ligety, 36, of Park City was added a year later.

Though they are the only Utahns on the “A” team, several others were added to the U.S. Ski Team’s developmental tiers. Sam DuPratt, 26, of Park City and Jared Goldberg, 29, of Holladay will compete for the “B” team. Lauren Macuga, 18, of Park City and Isabella Wright, 23, of Salt Lake City are the state’s only two women on the roster. They will compete on the developmental team. This is Wright’s first year on the team, while Macuga was added last winter.

The alpine team is at the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center at Copper Mountain, Colo., preparing for the upcoming season. Elite team members will head to Europe later this month to dive into the full FIS Ski World Cup schedule, which starts with two women’s slalom races in Levi, Finland, on Nov. 21-22.

The men will get their first chance to compete Nov. 27 in Austria in the parallel slalom, a new event as of last season. The event had been scheduled for this weekend, but was pushed back. The official reason was lack of snow, but as skiracing.com points out, Austria went under lockdown last week as a result of a spike in COVID-19 cases.
