(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) George Garwood of South Ogden joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 15 in 1972. It was not until 1978 that the church lifted its ban on anyone with black ancestry from being ordained to the priesthood. Having moved from St. Louis to Tooele, Garwood would be the only one out of nine kids in his family to convert. Now retired, he was a member of the church choir for seven years and the mayor of South Ogden, a City Council member and a member of the Olympic committee that brought the Winter Games to Utah.
Hired in 1991 to cover Utah's various faiths, particularly Mormonism, Peggy has talked forgiveness with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, nearly fainted waiting for the Dalai Lama, fasted with Muslims during Ramadan — and has reported on 50 consecutive semiannual LDS General Conferences.
