Is Utah — and Utah County in particular — ready for an openly gay Republican officeholder?

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Utah County Commissioner Nathan Ivie spends time on his 30-acre horse ranch in Benjamin, Utah, where he raises horses professionally. "These guys have always been my salvation," exclaims Ivie as he talks about the comfort his horses brought him. The Republican lawmaker in a heavily-Mormon area of Utah has publicly come out as gay. Ivie said his announcement, Wednesday, May 22, 2019, was inspired in part by his work with families who have lost gay children to suicide.
