Alta’s Supreme experiment failed, now the 7-year-old lift must be replaced

Unique bend has taken its toll on chairs, skiers.

Chris Detrick | The Salt Lake Tribune file Skiers slide forward on a conveyor belt that eases loading onto the original Supreme chair lift at Alta Ski Area. The lift was replaced prior to the 2017-18 season and combined with the Cecret chair. That combination required a unique, 8-degree bend in the alignment. An inspection of the lift in 2024 showed the lift is experiencing "accelerated metal fatigue" because of the bend and will have to be replaced prior to the 2025-26 season.
