(Photo courtesy of Manti-La Sal National Forest) Bark beetles have killed nearly all the Engelmann spruce on the Wasatch Plateau, leaving large swaths of dead timber. The U.S. Forest Service plans to remove at least half the dead and down trees, starting with Reeder Canyon, pictured here, in a project designed to restore the forest ecosystem through logging, thinning of live stands of fir, prescribed burning and replanting.
