‘Is our life worth a photo?’: The tragic death of a couple in Yosemite

More than 10,000 Instagram fans followed Meenakshi Moorthy and Vishnu Viswanath’s travels. But their mysterious deaths raise concerns about selfie culture.

(Facebook) Meenakshi Moorthy and Vishnu Viswanath posted this photograph from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to their Facebook page in August 2017. In October 2018, the couple’s bodies were discovered after tourists came across their abandoned camera equipment at the top of Taft Point, a granite outcropping 1,000 feet above the floor of Yosemite Valley. It is unclear whether the couple died while taking a selfie, as has been reported — though it would not be the first time that has happened in the park.
