Why a judge ruled that Utah Valley University didn’t have to help a sex assault victim

The claims against the Orem school, as well as the Utah System of Higher Education, are now dismissed. Marissa Root’s lawsuit will continue against the University of Utah.

(Leah Hogsten | The Salt Lake Tribune) "They offered me nothing, " said Marissa Root on Dec. 13, 2021 about the lack of resources and assistance she said she received from Utah Valley University and the University of Utah's Title IX offices after she reported her sexual assault in 2019. A judge ruled on Friday, March 3, 2023, that UVU didn't have to provide resources because the alleged attacker did not go to the school and the assault did not happen on campus.
