Exclusive: Utahns missed out on millions in coronavirus relief due to TestUtah’s COVID-19 testing

TestUtah’s strategy to skip asking patients about insurance means Utah misses out on payments from insurers and federal programs.

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) Nomi Health runs TestUtah coronavirus testing sites under contracts with the state, including this one at 800 North in Orem on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2021. Nomi Health does not ask test seekers whether they have insurance, which means shifts costs from private insurance to taxpayers and forces the state to spend COVID-19 relief dollars on some expenses that other dedicated government funding, such as Medicaid, would cover.
