Utah mother jailed after she tried to smother and strangle her young daughters

A Utah woman is in jail and accused of trying to smother and strangle her 2- and 4-year-old daughters.

According to a police record filed with the Davis County jail, the 27-year-old Layton woman’s husband recorded her threatening to kill herself and her daughters on Saturday. He witnessed his wife “attempt to smother both girls with a pillow”; after he stopped her, the woman locked herself in a room with the girls and tried to strangle them, “causing visible injury to their necks.”

The woman’s husband — the stepfather of the two girls — “was able to physically pry her hands from the first daughter’s neck”; she then “grabbed the youngest daughter and began strangling her as well.”

The woman admitted to police that she tried to smother and strangle her 2-year-old daughter, adding that “she did this to prove a point to her husband” — that when he recorded her he “pushed her to this course of action.”

The woman — who was on probation after a previous domestic violence incident — was booked into the jail on suspicion of attempted child-abuse homicide; assault; domestic violence in the presence of a child; and criminal mischief. She is being held without bail.
